The gold rush of the 1850s gave Walla Walla, Washington enough population to make a town, which in turn grew enough to support Whitman College, which opened its doors to students in 1883. Since then, Whitman has been proud of providing an intense academic experience without the elitism and perceived snobbery of the Eastern liberal arts establishment.
