The transformation of the University of Miami has been amazing to witness. Since Donna Shalala became President in 2001, the school has undergone a reputational shift from the notorious swagger of winning football to serious scholarship in the classroom. Some would say the academic excellence has always been the standard but was simply overshadowed by athletic misdeeds – because renegade athletes get more press than devoted scholars. Regardless of your view of history, the present situation is clear.
