Overview

Often overshadowed by its more famous Big Ten competitors, the University of Iowa is a progressive academic and social force in the heart of the American Midwest. It was the first public university in the US to admit women and men on an equal basis (1855); the first to offer insurance benefits to the domestic partners of employees (1993); and the first state university to officially recognize the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allied Union in 1970. It also offers a thriving social scene to its over 20,000 undergraduates.
