The University at Buffalo was founded in 1846 (under a different moniker) as a private medical school, and, in the years before he became president, Millard Fillmore served as its first chancellor. Since then, the school has evolved into a full-service research university having almost 20,000 undergraduates and a wide range of professional schools, including Architecture, Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. UB has recently attempted to upgrade its athletics programs, but the Bulls have met with limited success.
