Overview

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s purpose, since its beginning in 1824, has been “the application of science to the common purposes of life.” It rightly prides itself on the transfer of its ideas to the marketplace through its graduates and professors. RPI is a veritable petri dish of inventive ideas. Consider each of the following inventions originated at RPI: the ferris wheel, the cathode ray tube for TVs, the fire sprinkler, the plastic telephone wire, the microprocessor, sunscreen, the digital camera, baking soda, email and many other of life’s utilities.
