Overview

City College of the City University of New York was established in 1847 to provide free higher education to the citizens of New York. The founder, Townsend Harris (later to become the first US diplomat to Japan), was seeking to extend the model of free public schools to higher education. CCNY also developed a reputation for very progressive, even radical, politics. Students at CCNY experience an institute where generations of immigrants were educated, amidst the vast culture and energy of New York City.
