Although Cal Poly long ago outgrew its origins as a vocational high school, it is still intensely focused on practical and applied knowledge, as reflected in the school motto: “Learn by Doing.” These efforts are facilitated by the school’s vast land holdings (nearly 10,000 acres, the largest of any public university in California), and graduation requirements include a major “Senior Project.” The school was originally coeducational and is currently comprised of about 45% women, though females were banned from 1930 to 1956.
